It was like a good news when state governments across the Nation banned the use of motorcycles(called Okada) in major cities and towns across the nation while introducing tricycles popularly called keke or maruwa. This was widely received as a welcome development especially to reduce the rate of accidents occurring on our roads usually caused by the recklessness of these Okada riders.
The introduction of tricycles brought a change in a way for example it is more lucrative, not accident prone, reduce crime (of which most ladies can testify how their handbags keeps being snatched with bikes). However, there's this little issue but serious matter this change came with which the relevant agencies has failed to address. Have you been driving with tricycle(keke) in view with their lamps on or stay behind them in traffic? I have never seen a thing like this in my short life, the colour ranges from green and white to blue and yellow. The other day I nearly ran into the bush because of an oncoming keke no thanks to my normal headlamp and the question is 'what are agencies like Federal Road Safety Corps doing'? Isn't it time they teach this new arrivals how to use their lamps, stay in traffic and use their trafficators well?
Is not news anymore that some of these guys have redesign their keke to suit them and their lifestyles. There are curtains with hooks and locks, big stereos, extra light, inner light/inner mirror(which according to report is used to view under wears of women). The way they meander in hold up and most times block any possible opening through which one can escape the traffic jam.
I was happy when I heard some states like Abia banned the use of curtains and stereos in keke. Am aware many will complain but it is in the best interest of the masses.
We live in a country where everything is acceptable to the poor masses but something must be done about this.
Its time some people do their work and stop being on the highway checking for seatbelts and fire extinguishers. The government should do something too by building loading points for these keke operators to ease traffic in most towns.
Let them sensitize these people and teach them how to operate.
Some motorists are not left out as they are guilty of this crime, not knowing when to use full lamps and when to reduce it, I can only blame those that taught them how to drive. I do not know what would've happened if I had crashed Into the bush on the day of my bad experience.
Many people have gone to the great beyond due to this issue and we blame it on badluck or devil.
It's a little issue but a serious matter.
